Formula temperature calculator: use, formulas and limitations
Milk Ratio is a free tool for estimating hot-to-cool water ratios, external cooling water amounts and mixed water temperatures. No registration or installation is needed.
When is this tool useful?
Parents and caregivers can estimate temperatures and water amounts. Mix Water uses a target temperature, final volume and two water temperatures. Cool Down estimates water for a bath outside the bottle. Combine estimates the temperature of two mixed quantities of water. The tool does not determine feeding amounts or powder doses.
Preparation temperature is different from drinking temperature
WHO and Japan’s MHLW advise using water no cooler than 70°C to prepare powdered formula. Do not cool the water to the calculated drinking temperature before dissolving the powder. Follow the product instructions for powder, water quantities and preparation steps, then cool and check the actual temperature before feeding. Follow product instructions for water selection and boiling, too.
How is the temperature calculated?
The model assumes no heat loss and equal density and specific heat for the two quantities of water. Mixed temperature = (hot temperature × hot volume + cool temperature × cool volume) ÷ total volume. For example, 100ml at 80°C plus 100ml at 20°C gives an estimated 50°C. This water-only example is not a formula recipe or preparation instruction.
Powder displacement and uncertainty
Mix Water uses the configured volume increase: water volume = final volume ÷ (1 + increase percent ÷ 100). Hot volume = water volume × (target temperature − cool temperature) ÷ (hot temperature − cool temperature). Powder and bottle heat capacity, heat loss and measurement errors are excluded. Do not determine formula concentration from the displayed values or weight alone; check the final volume specified by the product.
Cooling water goes outside the bottle
Cooling water volume = milk volume × (milk temperature − 38) ÷ (38 − cooling water temperature). This estimates equilibrium at 38°C, not cooling time. It is not a function for diluting prepared formula. Containers and heat loss affect actual cooling.
A calculation is not a safety guarantee
This tool provides approximate temperature and volume calculations. It does not establish bacterial safety, nutritional concentration, feeding amounts or medical suitability. It is not certified or reviewed by WHO or MHLW. Follow your clinician’s instructions for individual feeding needs.
